Brought over from North America at the time of the conquistadores, the Robinia has so successfully naturalized in France that it is often the first tree to take root in areas of wasteland. This is because the tree is a pioneer species capable of growing on all types of soil, even very poor and exposed soils. Mistakenly called "acacia" due to it being a distant cousin of the true acacia, the Robinia produces nectar-bearing flowers, which are the source of acacia honey, a delicious light golden honey with a delicate floral flavour.
